Wendelin Van Draanen’s The Running Dream was an engrossing and emotional story. After losing her bottom part of her leg in a bus accident, a high schooler, Jessica Carlisle, was told by the doctors that she would never run again. Before she got on the bus to a track meet, Jessica’s life was perfect. Not only could she set a record, she had friends, a wonderful family, and was well respected by her teammates. However, when the bus was hit by a truck that would not only claim the life of the driver and her classmate, her dreams were shattered. Although she has been given the opportunity to resume a normal life with a prosthetic leg, she is unsure and doubtful that she could ever be the same. However, with a little prodding from her best friend, Fiona, Jessica tries to be the girl she used to be. Readers who enjoy emotional, heart-warming stories will enjoy this book as it is a moving story. The life lesson is no matter how big the burden, you can accomplish anything. She persevered throughout the book when things weren’t coming easy to her. When she wasn’t able to walk, she used her initiative to find many different techniques to move around her house. These traits made her seem like such a real character. Later on, it became happier when Jessica continued to move on the right track to recovery. A. I love it when books can do that….take you on a journey and changes how you look or think about things. My middle school daughter also read this and enjoyed it but thought the first part was a bit sad. If your child reads this be on hand to talk with them about life and death.
