Ben Miller’s CASMIRC series is thrilling and very, very dark. Don’t expect a ton of happiness as The Piper gets underway. A young mother is bound and has her child abducted by “The Piper” of the title, who immediately goes on to pull the same stunt again.
I found The Piper to be utterly compelling but certainly wouldn’t recommend it if you’re feeling at all blue – this is a depressingly bleak novel. (I know that’s twice I’ve said that but I also know that people tend to feel strongly about this kind of thing). If you can cope with that, this may be one of the most rewarding reads you pick up this January.
