The Perfect Nanny has been one of the big titles of the literary world in recent times. The book picked up a massive award in France and has been greeted with critical acclaim around the world. It is also, surprisingly, controversial with readers not quite as rapturous as the “intelligentsia”
I think readers are being a little harsh. This is an uncomfortable book about the fear of a mother’s loss. It’s not supposed to be pleasant but rather to shine a spotlight on places we’d often rather not look. I really enjoyed it and was thinking about The Perfect Nanny for days after I’d put it down.
Barrie Hardymon of NPR’s Weekend Edition says,
“If you’ve ever taken care of a kid, even if, just on a bus, someone has handed you a child for five seconds as they rummage through their purse, this will do something to you… At the end of reading this book, I was so devastated, but I really felt like I was looking at the world through new eyes.”
I think Leila Slimani has much to say and I hope that we hear more from her in the future.
You can buy The Perfect Nany by Leila Slimani on Amazon and I strongly recommend that you do.
